At Chatkol, during the night of 8 - 9 March 1953, serving with the United Nations in an outpost of C-company and attacked by a superior number of enemy soldiers, het thought himself lost, being wounded, out of ammunition and the only survivor of the six men post. His high sense of duty lead him to sacrifice himself and he armed his last grenade and held it high for increased effect among the attackers that encircled him. A Chinese soldier misinterpreted the gesture, took the grenade and walked off with it. The grenade exploded, no doubt severly wounding the Chinese. Vanderleyden, wounded again, lost conciousness and was found in his post when it was re-occupied. |
